Barbie viewers are reacting to a surprising cameo in the new film that serves as a "jump scare."

Directed by Greta Gerwig, the Mattel film was released on Friday (21 July) and has received rave reviews.

Margot Robbie portrays a version of the iconic doll alongside Ryan Gosling, who portrays a version of Ken. The star-studded cast also includes America Ferrera, Simu Liu, Issa Rae, and Will Ferrell.

In addition to these big names, the film features several recognizable faces in smaller roles, portraying various versions of the dolls.

One cameo, however, has caught UK cinemagoers off guard – Rob Brydon. As it turns out, Robbie played a significant role in ensuring his appearance in the film.

Fans first caught wind of Rob Brydon's potential appearance in the film when he attended the UK premiere earlier this month. The actor later tweeted, "Had a great time at the Barbie premiere celebrating my pivotal role as Sugar Daddy Ken. When you go to see this amazing film, please don't blink."

Many thought Brydon was simply joking, but they were taken by surprise when he appeared in a scene at "the house of 'weird' Barbie," portrayed by Kate McKinnon.

During the scene, two versions of Ken are present, and one of them happens to be Brydon's Sugar Daddy Ken. The twist is that instead of being a traditional "sugar daddy" character, which refers to an older man in a relationship with a younger person, he is the loving father of a fluffy white dog named Sugar. He shares the screen with Tom Stourton, known for his work in the sitcom Stath Lets Flats and the film All My Friends Hate Me.

It turns out that Margot Robbie is a "huge fan" of the TV show Gavin & Stacey, in which Brydon starred. She revealed to Cosmopolitan before the film's release that having Brydon in Barbie "was an enormous priority for me."

Brydon recently shared on Virgin Radio that he once sent Robbie a birthday message in character as Gavin & Stacey's Uncle Bryn, and he believes his casting in Barbie might have been her way of saying "thank you." In addition to starring in the film, Robbie also served as a producer.

Given the short duration of Brydon's appearance, some have humorously referred to it as a "jump scare," with one individual exclaiming, "I screamed!"

Other viewers described the moment as a standout highlight that received enthusiastic cheers from the audience.

"Rob Brydon showing up as Sugar Daddy Ken was the cherry on top of the Barbie movie for me," one viewer commented, with another adding, "I loved Barbie, but more importantly, I loved Rob Brydon as Sugar Daddy Ken, and that was enough for me to give the film a 10."

Barbie is currently playing in theaters and is projected to become the most successful film of the year.

The movie was released on the same day as Christopher Nolan's Oppenheimer, prompting many to rush to the cinema for a double bill of both films. Oppenheimer has already marked the director's biggest opening since blockbusters The Dark Knight and The Dark Knight Rises.
