The chilling deluge in Seregno, near Milan, came as a consequence of a severe hailstorm that struck an area already grappling with a widespread heatwave.

After a dramatic hailstorm in northern Italy, an icy torrent flooded through the streets of a town near Milan.

The fast-moving water inundated parts of Seregno, forming small ice sheets on the surface.

In footage circulating on social media, captured from an upper floor, the person behind the camera remarks, "It looks like a river flowing."

The street shown in the video appears deserted, with the exception of a man trying to sweep floodwater out of the ground floor of a building.

An individual out of the camera's view comments, "I see the owner of the shoe shop in front of me, and water is entering the shop."

The severe hailstorm struck Italy's northern Lombardy region, including Milan, and the northeastern Veneto region.

This area was already dealing with the aftermath of a intense heatwave that affected nearly the entire country, with temperatures soaring to 44°C (111°F) in the southern island of Sicily.

Scientists unanimously acknowledge that heatwaves around the globe are becoming more intense and frequent, largely due to the effects of climate change.
