An airstrike attributed to Israel has targeted the international airport located in the northern Syrian city of Aleppo. The attack caused damage to one of the runways, rendering it nonfunctional.

According to Syrian state media, an Israeli airstrike struck the international airport in the northern Syrian city of Aleppo early on Monday, causing damage to a runway and rendering it inoperable.

The Syrian state news agency, SANA, quoted a military official as saying that Israeli aircraft originating from the Mediterranean Sea carried out the attack around 4:30 a.m. No casualties were reported.

This year alone, the airport has faced several attacks, including two incidents in March that also resulted in its temporary closure.

Israeli officials have not provided an immediate response or comment.

In recent years, Israel has conducted numerous airstrikes within areas of Syria controlled by the government. Although these operations frequently target Syrian military forces and Iran-backed groups, Israel rarely acknowledges or discusses the details of these activities. Notably, both the Damascus and Aleppo airports have been subject to Israeli attacks.

Israel's intent behind these actions appears to be obstructing the flow of arms from Iran to militant groups supported by Tehran, such as Lebanon's Hezbollah. Thousands of fighters supported by Iran from various regions have participated in Syria's 12-year-long conflict, significantly influencing the balance in favor of President Bashar Assad's forces.

Aleppo, which suffered extensive destruction during Syria's civil war, experienced further damage from a deadly 7.8-magnitude earthquake that struck Turkey and Syria in February.
