In the event that former Mexico City Mayor Claudia Sheinbaum secures the nomination, Mexico might witness a scenario where women occupy the leading positions of both the top presidential election tickets.
Former Mayor of Mexico City, Claudia Sheinbaum, has extended her lead to a 13-point margin in the race to become the ruling party's candidate for Mexico's 2024 presidential election, according to a poll disclosed on Wednesday by El Universal newspaper.
As the announcement of the candidate is just around the corner, the poll revealed that Sheinbaum has garnered 35% of support to secure the nomination from the left-leaning National Regeneration Movement (MORENA). Following her is former Foreign Minister Marcelo Ebrard with 22%.
The survey, conducted by polling firm Buendia & Marquez and encompassing 1,000 adults, also indicated that Sheinbaum held a slightly higher level of popularity among respondents who aligned themselves with the opposition.
Both contenders have maintained their status as favored candidates within the MORENA party and have maintained a significant lead over other candidates in the poll, with former Interior Minister Adan Augusto Lopez securing only 7% support.
Buoyed by President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador's robust personal approval ratings, MORENA is strongly positioned to emerge victorious in the June 2024 election. Consequently, many analysts consider the MORENA internal contest to be akin to an unofficial presidential race.
The survey unveiled that Ebrard is the most widely recognized candidate, with 70% of respondents being familiar with him, closely followed by Sheinbaum at 69%.
Both candidates stepped down from their respective roles earlier this year to participate in the internal contest of the MORENA party, which formally commenced on June 19. The announcement of the winner is scheduled for September 6 and is anticipated to reflect the voters' preferences.
