Syrian state media and residents of Damascus report hearing repeated explosions in the vicinity of the capital early on Sunday morning.
Prior to dawn on Sunday, the area around the Syrian capital experienced a series of repeated explosions, as confirmed by state media and residents of Damascus.
Government officials have not yet issued a statement regarding the origin or intended target of the attack. However, similar occurrences in the past have commonly been attributed to Israeli airstrikes. These instances usually prompt Syrian air defenses to engage and intercept the incoming missiles.
The most recent such event occurred on August 7, when Syrian state media reported that Israeli airstrikes had struck locations around Damascus, resulting in the deaths of at least four Syrian army soldiers. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, an opposition-affiliated organization that monitors conflicts, asserted that these strikes were aimed at weapons depots, ammunition stockpiles, and positions held by Iran-backed militias in the vicinity of Damascus.
Israel, committed to thwarting Iranian influence nearby, has executed numerous strikes on targets within parts of Syria under government control over recent years. However, Israel seldom acknowledges responsibility for these actions.
Additionally, Israel has targeted both Damascus's international airports and the northern Syrian city of Aleppo multiple times in recent years, often leading to the temporary closure of these facilities.
