Moldova's Former President Dodon Calls for Opposition Unity Ahead of Local Elections

Leader of Moldova’s Party of Socialists and former Moldovan President Igor Dodon has urged the opposition to unite against the ruling Party of Action and Solidarity in preparation for the upcoming general election for local authorities.

In a statement on his Telegram channel, Dodon called on the opposition parties to focus their efforts on countering President Maia Sandu and the Party of Action and Solidarity, rather than fighting against his party. He accused the Sor and Revival parties of attempting to bribe members of his party to switch sides.

Dodon believes that the November 5th elections will reveal the true popularity of the Party of Action and Solidarity, which he believes is currently overestimated. He emphasized that the local elections will be a significant challenge for Sandu and her party, suggesting that the authorities might try to postpone the election to next year using the pretext of the situation in Ukraine.

According to Moldova’s Electoral Code, the electoral period lasts until the official announcement of election results, which cannot exceed 120 days. During this period, the Central Election Commission can make adjustments to electoral laws, form lower-level commissions, approve their financing, and carry out other preparatory work. The registration of candidates for mayors and members of local legislatures is set to begin on September 6, and the election campaign will commence on October 6.
