Warner Bros. Discovery Loses 1.8 Million Subscribers During Max Rebranding

Warner Bros. Discovery released its Q2 earnings report on Thursday, revealing a decline of 1.8 million streaming subscribers across HBO, Discovery+, and its newly merged streaming service Max. The company's total number of users now stands at 95.8 million, compared to 97.6 million in the previous quarter.

During the earnings call, WBD CEO David Zaslav expressed confidence in the migration to Max, stating that the majority of subscribers in the US were successfully transferred. Despite some anticipated disruptions, the company experienced lower churn rates than expected during this process.

The second quarter, covering the period from April 1 to June 30, marked the first time that Max subscriber figures were included in the report. The impact of Max will be more fully realized in the third quarter.

Max, the combined platform featuring HBO Max and Discovery+, was launched on May 23. In its initial week, 70% of existing HBO Max subscribers made the transition to Max, according to J. B. Perrette, WBD's global streaming president, as recently reported by the Wall Street Journal.
