The KCNA news agency reported that the exercise took place on the early hours of Saturday with the aim of sending a message to potential adversaries, signaling North Korea's readiness for nuclear conflict.
North Korea executed a simulated "tactical nuclear attack" exercise on Saturday, which involved the launch of two long-range cruise missiles, according to state media's report on Sunday. Concurrently, leader Kim Jong Un conducted inspections at shipbuilding and munitions facilities.
The KCNA news agency stated that the drill, conducted in the early hours of Saturday, was intended to send a warning to potential adversaries, emphasizing North Korea's preparedness for nuclear warfare. Pyongyang reiterated its commitment to strengthening military deterrence against both Washington and Seoul.
The two cruise missiles, carrying imitation nuclear warheads, were launched towards the West Sea of the Korean Peninsula, covering a distance of 930 miles while maintaining a predetermined altitude of 150 meters.
In a distinct announcement, it was disclosed that Kim Jong Un paid a visit to the Pukjung Machine Complex, responsible for manufacturing marine engines, as well as a significant munitions factory, underlining the critical need to enhance Pyongyang's naval capabilities.
"He confirmed that a forthcoming plenary session of the Central Committee of the Worker's Party of Korea (WPK) would outline a significant modernization plan for the complex and chart the developmental course for the shipbuilding sector," as stated in the KCNA release.
The precise date of his visit was not detailed in the statement.
The most recent missile test occurred shortly after the conclusion of the annual joint summertime exercises between South Korea and the United States, referred to as Ulchi Freedom Shield, which ran for 11 days and featured air drills involving B-1B bombers.
North Korea has intensified its efforts to bolster its military deterrence vis-Ã -vis Washington and Seoul, expressing dissatisfaction with the summit agreement reached between the two nations last month aimed at enhancing military cooperation.
A KCNA statement on August 21 revealed that Kim had recently visited a navy fleet stationed on the east coast to oversee a strategic cruise missile test conducted aboard a warship. During the visit, he emphasized the ship's continued combat readiness and striking capabilities.
