An India Railway Protection Force (RPF) constable has been apprehended after fatally shooting four individuals on a train near Mumbai city.
The accused, identified as Chetan Kumar, allegedly killed a senior RPF official and three passengers. Authorities are currently investigating the motive behind the shooting and working to identify the deceased passengers.
The primary responsibility of RPF personnel is to safeguard railway passengers and property throughout India.
The tragic incident occurred at approximately 5:30 local time (3:00 GMT) on a train journeying from Jaipur in the western state of Rajasthan to Mumbai city in Maharashtra.
According to an RPF statement, Mr. Kumar first targeted Tikaram Meena, an assistant sub-inspector with the RPF, and subsequently shot three other passengers.
The incident unfolded shortly after the train passed Palghar, a town approximately 96km (60 miles) away from the state capital, Mumbai. Afterward, Mr. Kumar activated the in-house alarm chain, which is used to halt trains during emergencies, and attempted to escape. However, he was eventually apprehended on the outskirts of Mumbai and taken into custody.
A senior official from the Western Railways informed reporters that there appeared to be no altercation between Mr. Kumar and others leading up to the shooting.
"It seems like he was not well," the official remarked.
