Collagen Supplements Boost Skin Elasticity, But Won't Stop Wrinkles

A new scientific review has found that taking daily collagen supplements can improve skin elasticity and hydration, but will not prevent wrinkles.

According to the review, which analyzed 113 trials involving nearly 8,000 people, collagen supplements can provide legitimate skin benefits when taken over time, but are no quick fix. The review was published in the Aesthetic Surgery Journal Open Forum.

The researchers from Anglia Ruskin University, led by Prof Lee Smith, found that collagen supplements may also help ease wear and tear, arthritis joint pain, and stiffness.

How Collagen Works

Collagen is a protein made naturally in the body, but its production declines with age. It supports and strengthens skin, nails, bones, and connective tissues, including tendons and cartilage.

Smoking and sun damage can accelerate collagen decline, while menopause can lead to a significant loss of collagen, according to the researchers.

Supplement Types and Effectiveness

There are several types of collagen supplements available, including marine, bovine, and vegan collagen. However, the review was unable to determine if certain types are more effective than others.

Prof Lee Smith said: "Collagen is not a cure-all, but it does have credible benefits when used consistently over time, particularly for skin and osteoarthritis."

Diet and Skin Health

Bridget Benelam, a nutrition scientist at the British Nutrition Foundation, emphasized the importance of diet for skin health, noting that vitamin C and zinc are essential for collagen formation.

Dr Tamara Griffiths, president of the British Association of Dermatologists, welcomed the research but recommended further studies to build on the findings.
