Collagen Supplements Boost Skin Elasticity, But Won't Erase Wrinkles

A new scientific review has found that taking daily collagen supplements can improve skin elasticity and hydration, but it won't stop wrinkles from forming.

According to the review, which analyzed 113 trials involving nearly 8,000 people, collagen pills or powder can provide legitimate skin benefits over time, but are no quick fix. The review was published in the Aesthetic Surgery Journal Open Forum.

Collagen is a protein made naturally in the body, but its production declines with age. The researchers from Anglia Ruskin University found that collagen supplements may also ease wear and tear, arthritis joint pain, and stiffness.

Types of Collagen Supplements

There are several types of collagen supplements available, including marine, bovine, and vegan collagen. However, the review was unable to determine if certain types worked better than others.

Prof Lee Smith, one of the lead investigators, said: "This study brings together the strongest evidence to date on collagen supplementation. Collagen is not a cure-all, but it does have credible benefits when used consistently over time, particularly for skin and osteoarthritis."

Nutrition and Skin Health

Bridget Benelam, a nutrition scientist at the British Nutrition Foundation, noted that diet is also important for skin health. She recommended consuming foods rich in vitamin C, such as citrus fruits and green vegetables, to help with collagen formation.

Dr Tamara Griffiths, president of the British Association of Dermatologists, welcomed the research but called for further studies to build on the findings.
