Hannah Spencer, a 34-year-old former plumber, has won the Westminster by-election in Gorton and Denton, Greater Manchester, as the Green Party's candidate.

According to the Green Party, Spencer's victory marks the party's first ever Westminster by-election win, as reported by media outlets.

Spencer, who currently leads the Greens on Trafford Council, said in her victory speech: "I think I might have to cancel the work that you had booked in, because I'm heading to Parliament. And when I get there, I will make space for everyone doing jobs like mine, we will finally get a seat at the table."\

Background and Campaign

Spencer, who has lived in Greater Manchester all her life, was born in Bolton and has represented the Hale ward on Trafford Council since May 2023.

During her campaign, Spencer emphasized her desire to help those struggling with the cost of living, saying: "Instead of working for a nice life, we're working to line the pockets of billionaires. We are being bled dry."\

Policy Positions

Spencer has expressed support for ending privatisation in the NHS and nationalising water companies, and has also spoken out on issues related to the conflict in Gaza.

She has described herself as a marathon runner and "housemate to four rescued greyhounds", with the dogs often accompanying her on the campaign trail.

Reaction to Victory

Green Party leader Zack Polanski said: "What happened last night is despite the fact that the other parties threw the kitchen sink at us, we had Hannah the plumber. And ultimately Hannah has demonstrated the complete opposite. You can be absolutely true to your values and you must be true to your values."\

Spencer will join four other Green Party MPs in the House of Commons: Siân Berry, Adrian Ramsay, Carla Denyer, and Ellie Chowns.
