The Greens have won the Gorton and Denton by-election, with their new MP, Hannah Spencer, set to take her seat in Westminster.

This victory marks a significant shift in the political landscape, as reported by the BBC, with the Greens blasting away one of Labour's biggest majorities.

Under the leadership of Zack Polanski, the Greens are now playing in a different political league, according to Polanski and Spencer.

Labour Response

Labour politicians are concerned that this result could be a blueprint for other parts of the country, with some MPs fearing that the Greens could become a major force on the left of British politics.

Angela Rayner, Sir Keir Starmer's former deputy, has called for Labour to take this as a "wake up call" and become "braver".

Conservative Performance

The Conservatives performed poorly in the by-election, with only 700 or so votes and losing their deposit.

This result, combined with the previous by-election in Runcorn and Helsby, points to a new dynamic of surging political forces to the traditional parties' left and right.

Greens' Victory

Hannah Spencer marked her victory by apologising to customers for potentially having to cancel work due to her Westminster move, and stated that "we can demand better without hating each other".

Labour, which took the seat with more than 50% of the vote in 2024, came behind Reform UK and the Greens, with the Greens now holding the seat.
