The Flip 7 boasts several notable features, including a detachable loop, upgraded IP68 dust and water resistance, and a new shockproof casing tested for 3-foot drops. These enhancements make it an ideal choice for outdoor use, such as by the pool or at the beach. Additionally, JBL has begun to integrate Auracast, a future-looking technology that enables latency-free transmission of an infinite number of devices, into its new speaker line.
Inside the Platform
Auracast, which uses a new Bluetooth protocol, currently allows the Flip 7 to connect with other JBL Auracast speakers in tandem. However, it's worth noting that JBL has done away with its older PartyBoost feature, limiting the ability to group the Flip 7 with older speakers. The only compatible models are newer ones, such as the Charge 6 and Clip 5.
In terms of sound quality, the Flip 7 offers minor upgrades to instrumental definition, resulting in a more refined listening experience. The speaker has also lost some of its aggressive touch, which sometimes led to minor distortion in older models. While it will still distort if pushed too hard, it can handle volumes of over 75 dB without any audible issues.
The Infrastructure Question
The Flip 7's battery life has also seen an improvement, increasing from 12 hours in previous models to 14 hours, depending on volume. With its new Playtime Boost mode, users can extend the battery life up to 16 hours, although this comes at the cost of reduced bass.
