As news broke of the US and Israel's attack on Iran, disinformation flooded X, with hundreds of posts promoting misleading claims about the locations and scale of the attack. According to a review by WIRED, many of these posts have racked up millions of views, highlighting the platform's ongoing struggle to contain false information.
Elon Musk's social media platform has become a haven for disinformation, especially during major global breaking news events. The platform's lack of effective moderation has allowed false and misleading posts to spread quickly, often with the help of accounts with blue check marks, which pay X for its premium service and could be eligible to earn money based on engagement.
Inside the Disinformation Machine
One of the most viral clips shared on X claims to show an Israeli fighter jet being shot down by Iranian air defense systems, but the provenance of the video is unclear, and there have been no credible reports of any Israeli jets being shot down over Iran. Another account posted a video showing explosions, alongside the caption: “6 Iranian Hypersonic Missiles hit the Indian-invested Israeli Haifa port. Massive damages reported.” However, the footage was actually captured last July and shows an Israeli attack on the defense ministry in Damascus, Syria.
Pro-Iranian accounts have also been using images and footage from Saturday's attacks to falsely claim successful strikes against Israel. The Iran Observer account wrote in a post featuring an image of Dubai: “IRANIAN MISSILE IMPACT IN TEL AVIV RIGHT NOW,” which had been viewed over 200,000 times before it was deleted. Dozens of other posts sharing the same image and making the same claims remain on X.
The Regulatory Angle
X's lack of effective moderation has raised concerns among regulators and experts, who point to the platform's repeated failures to contain disinformation. As the platform continues to struggle with false and misleading posts, it remains to be seen how regulators will respond to the ongoing crisis. X did not respond to a request for comment.
The use of AI-generated images has also been flagged on X, with Tehran Times posting an image that claims to show an American radar in Qatar being destroyed in an Iranian drone strike. However, there are no reports of similar successful attacks in Qatar, highlighting the need for more effective moderation and fact-checking on the platform.
System-Level Consequences
The spread of disinformation on X has significant system-level consequences, as it can exacerbate tensions and fuel further conflict. As the platform continues to struggle with false and misleading posts, it is essential to consider the broader implications for global stability and security. The ongoing crisis on X highlights the need for more effective moderation, fact-checking, and regulation of social media platforms.
