Collagen Supplements Improve Skin Elasticity, But Won't Prevent Wrinkles

A new scientific review has found that taking daily collagen supplements can improve skin elasticity and hydration, but it will not stop wrinkles from forming.

Experts from Anglia Ruskin University analyzed 113 trials involving nearly 8,000 people and concluded that collagen supplements provide some legitimate skin benefits when taken over time.

The researchers, led by Prof Lee Smith, also found that collagen supplements may help ease joint pain and stiffness associated with arthritis.

How Collagen Works

Collagen is a protein made naturally in the body that supports and strengthens skin, nails, bones, and connective tissues. However, its production declines with age, and factors such as smoking and sun damage can accelerate this process.

Around the time of menopause, skin loses a significant amount of collagen, according to the researchers, who published their findings in the Aesthetic Surgery Journal Open Forum.

Types of Collagen Supplements

There are several types of collagen supplements available, including marine, bovine, and vegan options. However, the review did not find any evidence to suggest that one type is more effective than another.

Prof Lee Smith noted that many studies on collagen supplements have been funded by the supplement industry, which has led to "bold claims" about their anti-aging benefits.

Expert Reactions

Bridget Benelam, a nutrition scientist at the British Nutrition Foundation, emphasized the importance of diet in maintaining skin health, citing the role of vitamin C and zinc in collagen formation.

Dr Tamara Griffiths, president of the British Association of Dermatologists, welcomed the research but called for further studies to build on the findings.
