England's Chief Medical Officer, Prof Sir Chris Whitty, has stated that relying on weight-loss drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro to tackle obesity would be a societal and medical failure.

According to Sir Chris, these drugs are "transformational" for people who need them, but this should be "a very small minority". He emphasized that letting people become obese and then medicating them for life would be "shocking" and the "wrong answer" to one of the UK's most pressing health issues.

Sir Chris expressed concern about obesity, citing the "optimal weight" for healthy living and the increased risk of cancers, heart disease, type 2 diabetes, and infections associated with larger waistlines.

Obesity Levels in the UK

Around two thirds of adults in the UK are overweight or obese, with levels soaring over the past three decades. In contrast, obesity levels in France have remained relatively stable during the same period.

Sir Chris suggested that the UK could learn from other countries, such as France, which have been more successful in promoting healthy eating habits and preventing obesity.

Weight-Loss Drugs and Public Health

The NHS offers Wegovy and Mounjaro through specialist weight management services to those with the greatest need. However, Sir Chris warned that relying on these drugs as a solution to obesity would be a "societal failure".

It is estimated that 1.6 million people in the UK have tried weight-loss drugs in the past year. Sir Chris emphasized that these drugs are not a substitute for public health efforts and that a comprehensive approach to addressing obesity is necessary.

Marketing and Food Choices

Sir Chris criticized the aggressive marketing of junk food to children, which he believes drives obesity and leaves the health service to "pick up the pieces" for the rest of their lives. He also highlighted the difference in food options available on high streets in UK towns compared to equivalent towns in France.

Sir Chris argued that cutting the amount of fat and sugar in our diet does not mean eating unpleasant food, citing the example of French cuisine. He emphasized that promoting healthy, tasty, and affordable food is possible and that other countries, such as France, have successfully done so.
