The BBC has gathered responses from over 750 GPs in England regarding their experiences with signing fit notes for mental health concerns.

According to the responses, 540 GPs stated they had never refused a fit note for mental health issues, while 162 reported having denied at least one such request.

A smaller number, 50 GPs, preferred not to disclose their experiences. The BBC sent a questionnaire to more than 5,000 GPs in England to gather this information.

Police and Authority Response

There is no police response relevant to this story, as it focuses on the experiences of GPs with fit notes.

The Royal College of GPs (RCGP) stated that family doctors may not always be the most appropriate professionals to provide long-term support for patients to return to work.

Investigation and Findings

The BBC analysis of NHS data shows that 72% of fit notes do not specify a reason for the patient being signed off work.

However, more than 956,000 notes last year cited mental health and behavioral disorders as the underlying reason, exceeding any other condition.

Government Response and Reforms

The government has acknowledged that the current fit note system needs reforming and is exploring new approaches, including so-called 'stay in/return to work' plans developed with businesses and occupational health professionals.

A spokesperson for the government stated, 'We know that we need to do more to build a system that works for everyone.'

Business and Community Involvement

Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) is one of 60 companies working with officials to develop 'stay in/return to work' plans, which include setting up 'centres of wellbeing' for employees in the UK.

Dr. Richard Peters, JLR's chief medical officer, emphasized the importance of supporting people with health conditions in the workplace, stating, 'It's the right thing to do because if we have a healthier staff, then we have a more productive workforce.'
