The final qualification spots for the FIFA World Cup 2026 are nearing a conclusion, with UEFA's continental playoff route set to decide the last four European spots.
The playoffs will feature 16 remaining teams, with the first round of matches scheduled for March 27, consisting of single-leg semifinals, and the second round on March 31, with the four winners advancing to the World Cup.
According to UEFA, the four final qualifying places will be decided by the 12 runners-up from the group qualifying stage and four teams based on their performances in the UEFA Nations League.
UEFA Qualification Path
The 16 remaining teams are divided into four paths, with only the winner of each path qualifying for the World Cup, and the highest-ranked teams hosting the semifinals.
Italy, a four-time World Cup champion, is among the teams still vying for a spot, and coach Gennaro Gattuso acknowledged the pressure, saying, "It's undeniable that there's nervousness, only someone without blood running through their veins wouldn't feel it."
Intercontinental Playoffs
FIFA's Play-Off Tournament will provide a last chance for two non-qualified teams from other continental processes, featuring six teams from CONCACAF, Asia, Africa, South America, and Oceania.
The lineup includes Jamaica and Suriname from CONCACAF, Iraq from Asia, DR Congo from Africa, Bolivia from South America, and New Caledonia from Oceania, with two teams set to advance to the World Cup.
