US President Donald Trump has been openly criticizing the UK and its prime minister, Sir Keir Starmer, in recent days.
According to the BBC, President Trump has stated that the UK used to be the "Rolls-Royce of allies" and implied that Sir Keir Starmer cannot make decisions without consulting others.
Downing Street has chosen not to engage in a public dispute with the White House, but sources in Whitehall claim that President Trump has misrepresented details of the discussions between the two leaders.
Disagreement Over Facts
British sources indicate that there was no request for the UK to provide aircraft carriers in the Gulf, nor was such an offer made.
Additionally, the UK has a runway at RAF Akrotiri in Cyprus, making the need for aircraft carriers less pressing.
Formal Requests
There have been three formal requests from Washington to the UK: the use of airfields for initial attacks, which was rejected; the use of airfields for defensive purposes, which was accepted; and support for ensuring the safety of oil tankers in the Strait of Hormuz, which is still being negotiated.
Prime Minister's Conviction
Sir Keir Starmer's decision aligns with his conviction about the parallels between this conflict and the Iraq War, as well as his view on the importance of international law.
His stance is also in line with the majority opinion among Labour MPs and the British public, according to a YouGov survey.
