xAI, the deep learning lab founded by Elon Musk, is undergoing a significant personnel overhaul in an effort to compete with Anthropic and OpenAI. Of the original 11 co-founders, only two remain, with the most recent departures including co-founders Zihang Dai and Guodong Zhang.

According to Musk, the restructuring is a deliberate effort to rebuild the company from the ground up. In a statement on his social media platform, X, Musk said, "xAI was not built right the first time around, so is being rebuilt from the foundations up."

The company is facing intense pressure to develop competitive AI coding tools, a key area of revenue generation for AI labs. xAI's current lag in this area is seen as a business problem, with rivals Anthropic and OpenAI already offering established coding tools like Claude Code and Codex.

The Funding and Staffing Challenges

xAI has approximately 5,000 employees, compared to over 7,500 at OpenAI and over 4,700 at Anthropic. Despite the challenges, xAI has made some encouraging hires, including Andrew Milich and Jason Ginsberg from the AI coding tool company Cursor.

Musk is also reviewing rejected employment applications, with the goal of identifying promising candidates who may have been overlooked. This effort is part of a broader push to attract top talent to the company.

Market Context and Competition

xAI is not the only company working on AI-powered coding tools. Anthropic and OpenAI are already established players in this space, and other companies, such as Perplexity, are also developing similar technologies. Perplexity's "Everything is Computer" offering, for example, aims to provide enterprise users with a dedicated "digital proxy" that can orchestrate their digital tasks.

xAI's Macrohard project, which aims to create an AI agent capable of performing tasks similar to those of a white-collar worker, is also facing challenges. The project is currently on pause, but Musk has announced that it will be a joint effort with Tesla, which is developing a complementary agent called "Digital Optimus".

What's Next for xAI

With a public offering of SpaceX shares anticipated, xAI is under pressure to demonstrate real uptake on its LLM, Grok. The company's ability to develop competitive AI coding tools and attract top talent will be crucial to its success in the coming months.
